After managing an ankle injury for almost a month, Amani Hansberry is back to full health, bringing renewed energy and adding a new dimension to the West Virginia University (WVU) offense.
Hansberry, who had been struggling with the injury since Dec. 22, proved his value in a recent game by providing the Mountaineers with a spark when their offense seemed stagnant. Head coach Darian DeVries praised Hansberry’s performance, especially in the first half, where he scored nine points, including three successful three-pointers.
“Amani got us back into the game, gave us a little bit of energy back into our defense… from hitting a couple threes,” DeVries said.
Hansberry’s confidence on the court is evident. “My shot always feels good. I honestly just shoot with confidence at all times,” Hansberry remarked. His belief in his ability, supported by his teammates, coaches, and even the managers, has helped him continue to contribute to the team’s success.
Over the past two games, Hansberry has scored 12 points and 16 points, a significant improvement after scoring just 18 points combined in his previous four games. DeVries noted that while the ankle injury was significant, Hansberry is now returning to the form he showed earlier in the season.
“He’s been very limited in practice… but he’s been able to give us what he could while he was coming along,” DeVries said. Hansberry’s recent performances indicate he’s back to his early-season form, reminiscent of his high-level play during WVU’s games in the Bahamas.
In the win over Iowa State, Hansberry finished with 12 points and six rebounds, his best performance since Dec. 14. DeVries noted that Hansberry’s increased bounce and energy have been noticeable, particularly in his defense and ability to grab tough rebounds—traits that contributed to the Mountaineers’ success.
