Hopewell Girls Basketball Team Aims for Playoff Push with Full Roster

by Kaia

The Hopewell High School Girls Basketball team is gearing up for a strong finish to their regular season, with only seven games left to secure a playoff berth. After a tough start to the season, marked by an early losing streak, the Vikings are now healthy and focused on making a late push toward the WPIAL playoffs.

One of the primary challenges Hopewell faced was a series of injuries, most notably to Caylee Sundy, last season’s leading scorer. The team struggled in her absence, but as they approach the second half of the season, coach Jeff Homziak is optimistic about the team’s potential, thanks to a fully healthy roster.

“We’ve had players step up in roles they weren’t initially prepared for,” Homziak explained. “While it has affected our record, it has also accelerated the development of our younger players.”

With Sundy now back on the court, her leadership has been invaluable. However, the team has also seen significant growth from freshmen like Addison Blosnick and Cici Smetana, who have taken on larger roles due to the injuries. Their increased playing time against varsity-level competition has provided valuable experience for both them and the coaching staff.

Homziak highlighted the importance of these opportunities, noting that the team’s depth has significantly improved, making the Vikings stronger for the stretch run. “We’ve been able to assess our strengths and weaknesses, and it has helped us build a deeper roster,” he said.

Currently sitting in fifth place in their section, Hopewell is looking to climb into the playoff spots. The key to making that leap will come in their upcoming matchup with Hampton, where a win could put them in a tie for fourth place, securing a postseason spot.

Monday’s game, set for 7:30 PM at Hopewell High School, is crucial to their playoff hopes. The Vikings’ path to the playoffs could hinge on their performance, and local support could make a significant difference.

Here’s a look at the standings and Hopewell’s remaining schedule as they strive to finish the season strong.
