Sarah Goodman, a nutritionist with a passion for snacks, has turned her love for healthy treats into a thriving business. Chiwis, her brand of nutritious, crispy fruit chips, was born from a simple desire to enjoy sweets without sacrificing health.
“Kiwi chips were something I would often make at home because they tasted like candy and were packed with nutrients. After years of positive feedback from friends and family, I realized there could be something more to it. That’s when I began researching the food business, and slowly transitioned from my full-time role in health-tech to focusing on Chiwis,” Goodman shared.
Chiwis: A New Era of Fruit Chips
Chiwis began with two core products: the Original Chiwis, 100% crispy dried kiwi chips, and Tropical Chiwis, a blend of kiwi, pineapple, and coconut chips. The brand takes an eco-conscious approach by upcycling imperfect fruit, reducing waste while maintaining quality.
Chiwis has since expanded, introducing three new varieties: Orange Chiwis, made from crispy orange chips with rind for added vitamin C and fiber; Pina Chiwis, pineapple chips made using the fruit’s core to reduce waste; and Mango Chiwis, large crispy mango chips that include the skin for extra fiber. These exciting new products will soon be available in stores.
Advice for Aspiring Food Entrepreneurs
For those looking to break into the food industry, Goodman stresses the importance of learning from others. “Reach out to founders who have built successful brands. Learn from their experiences, both the successes and the challenges.”
Goodman also emphasizes the role of education, recalling how courses through Good to Grow were pivotal in her own journey. “The knowledge I gained helped me make the right decisions and navigate the complexities of the food industry.”
Supporting the Next Generation of Entrepreneurs
When offering advice to students at Simon Fraser University, Goodman highlighted the importance of building a support network. “Surround yourself with experienced people who can offer guidance. I surrounded myself with advisors from various sectors of the food industry and beyond, so I always have someone to turn to, whether it’s for advice during tough times or to celebrate successes.”
Looking Ahead: A Growing Brand
As Chiwis continues to evolve, Goodman is excited about the future. “We aim to expand our product line further, creating snacks that are 100% natural, irresistibly tasty, and guilt-free,” she said.
With her vision set on growth and sustainability, Sarah Goodman’s Chiwis is poised to make a lasting impact on the snack industry.
