Hong Kong and Germany Forge Strategic Collaboration to Advance Chinese Medicine

by Kaia

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has taken a significant step in the global expansion of Chinese medicine by signing a strategic collaboration agreement with TCM-Klinik Bad Kotzting, the first officially recognized traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospital in Germany. This partnership aims to enhance the international reach of Chinese medicine, fostering greater exchange and cooperation between Eastern and Western healthcare practices.

Founded in 1991, TCM-Klinik Bad Kotzting has long been a leader in the field of Chinese medicine in Europe. In contrast, Hong Kong Baptist University’s Chinese Medicine Hospital (CMHHK) is a more recent development, expected to begin phased operations later this year in Tseung Kwan O. HKBU was selected to manage and operate the hospital in 2021 through a competitive tender process.

The collaboration marks a pivotal milestone in the expansion of CMHHK’s international presence, strengthening Hong Kong’s role as a key player in the global promotion of Chinese medicine. Huen Wong, Chairman of the HKBU Chinese Medicine Hospital Company, highlighted that the partnership would bring together Chinese medicine experts from both Germany and Hong Kong to create evidence-based clinical pathways, improve talent exchange, and advance the integration of scientific research into clinical services.

The collaboration aligns with the Hong Kong government’s goals of leveraging the city’s healthcare system to establish Chinese medicine as a globally recognized practice.

As part of the agreement, both hospitals will exchange medical talent, explore clinical applications for the integration of Chinese and Western medicine, and build a scientific research network to study the interactions between the two disciplines. The two institutions will also focus on advancing clinical applications of herb-drug interactions by collecting and analyzing clinical data, furthering the development of Chinese medicine in an international context.
