Varicocele, a condition characterized by swollen veins in the scrotum, is a leading but often neglected cause of male infertility. Similar to varicose veins in the legs, varicocele occurs when veins inside the testes enlarge, potentially affecting fertility without noticeable symptoms.
Understanding the Impact on Fertility
In a recent interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Sandeep Talwar, a fertility specialist at Nova Southend Fertility and IVF, New Delhi, emphasized the prevalence of varicocele, particularly among men aged 15 to 25. Although it often goes unnoticed due to a lack of pain or discomfort in the early stages, varicocele can significantly impair fertility.
“Varicocele disrupts the delicate temperature regulation of the testes, which is crucial for sperm production,” explained Dr. Talwar. “The resulting rise in temperature can cause abnormal sperm development, reduced sperm count, and even lower testosterone levels, all of which reduce the chances of fatherhood.”
How Varicocele Impairs Sperm Quality
Dr. Talwar elaborated that varicocele leads to elevated temperatures in the testes, which negatively impacts sperm quality. Increased heat can impair sperm motility, shape, and overall development, contributing to infertility. In addition, varicocele can cause oxidative stress, which damages sperm DNA.
Moreover, varicocele can lower testosterone levels, resulting in hormonal imbalances that hinder the production of healthy sperm. If left untreated, this condition can make it increasingly difficult for men to conceive naturally.
The Importance of Timely Intervention
Dr. Talwar stressed the need for prompt medical consultation to manage varicocele effectively. Early diagnosis through physical examination and semen analysis can help assess the severity of the condition and its impact on sperm production. In many cases, surgical intervention is recommended to repair the veins and improve fertility.
“Men must not ignore this condition,” Dr. Talwar concluded. “It’s crucial to seek expert advice and take informed decisions regarding treatment. Addressing varicocele early can significantly enhance the chances of conceiving successfully.”
By taking proactive steps, men can safeguard their reproductive health and improve their chances of fatherhood.
