Dave Asprey, a prominent biohacker and Instagram lifestyle influencer known as the “father of biohacking,” has shared insights into why some people wake up between 3 and 5 a.m. and struggle to return to sleep. Asprey is the creator of a DIY health movement that encourages individuals to modify their lifestyles, diets, and bodies to extend their lifespan. Despite his influence, he does not hold a medical degree or any formal nutritional training. Asprey has reportedly invested $2 million in efforts to reverse his biological clock and is also behind the controversial Bulletproof diet, which promotes a low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating plan.
While some followers claim to have benefited from the Bulletproof diet, the British Dietetic Association has labeled it a fad diet. Now, Asprey believes he has identified the cause of nighttime awakenings and offers a potential solution.
According to Asprey, those who wake up between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. may experience a drop in blood sugar. He explains, “Most people who wake up feeling that way realize their blood sugar has dropped. The body needs glucose to power the brain for its nightly cleaning process.”
To respond to this drop in blood sugar, Asprey says the body releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. While this glucose is stored in the muscles and liver, Asprey warns that “cortisol and adrenaline wake you up.” He notes that while the brain receives the glucose it requires, individuals lose out on precious sleep.
As a remedy, Asprey suggests having a snack before bed. He recommends trying raw honey, collagen, or MCT oil, or even mixing all three together. This could help prevent nighttime awakenings and improve overall sleep quality.
