TikTok Diet Hack: Cinnamon and Cocoa for Fat Burning—Is It Legit?

A new TikTok trend claims that adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to your morning coffee, along with cocoa, can help burn fat. But how effective is this combo?

Cinnamon, derived from the inner bark of the cinnamomum tree, comes in two main varieties: cassia and Ceylon. Cassia cinnamon, the more commonly used type, is known for its bitter taste and higher levels of cinnamaldehyde, the compound responsible for cinnamon’s distinct flavor and scent. Ceylon cinnamon, on the other hand, is sweeter and contains 40% less cinnamaldehyde.

Studies on cinnamon’s potential weight-loss benefits show that participants who took cinnamon supplements lost an average of 1.48 pounds over periods of two to six months. Most of the research was conducted with participants from the Middle East or the Indian subcontinent.

Research suggests cinnamon may help lower blood sugar by speeding up the process of glucose entering the body’s cells, making insulin more effective. This effect can help lower the risk of diabetes and possibly aid in fat breakdown. Additionally, cinnamon may promote feelings of fullness by slowing digestion.

Kara Collier, a registered dietitian nutritionist and VP of Health at Nutrisense, pointed out that cinnamon also offers anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. However, more human studies are needed to fully understand its health benefits.

The TikTok hack also includes coffee and cocoa, which might support weight loss as well. A study by Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health suggests that drinking up to four cups of coffee a day can reduce body fat by about 4%. Cocoa, rich in fiber, can help you feel full and support healthy weight management.

Risks of Cinnamon

While cinnamon is a popular ingredient in many dishes, it can pose health risks. This year, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued several warnings about lead contamination in packaged cinnamon sold at stores like Dollar Tree and Patel Brothers. Lead contamination can occur during the growing, manufacturing, or shipping processes and can sometimes be added to enhance color or weight.

In addition to lead, some people may experience gastrointestinal issues or allergic reactions after consuming cinnamon. The spice contains coumarin, a compound that, in high doses, can cause liver damage. Cassia cinnamon contains up to 1% coumarin, while Ceylon cinnamon contains much less—about 0.004%.

If you’re concerned about the health risks of cinnamon, especially if you’re on medication, it’s a good idea to consult your doctor before increasing your intake.
