Orange, Calif. – Dr. Sumit Garg, medical director of the UCI Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, has been named one of the top ophthalmologists in the country as part of the 2024 Healio Honors program. This prestigious recognition highlights healthcare professionals who are nominated by their peers for their outstanding care and commitment to patients.
Dr. Garg is a nationally recognized expert in advanced techniques for cataract surgery, corneal and refractive surgery, and intraocular lens implants. He has been repeatedly honored as a Physician of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association.
A recent example of his exceptional care involves a patient with severe keratoconus, a condition causing progressive vision loss. Under Dr. Garg’s treatment plan, which included corneal crosslinking and specialty contact lenses, the patient’s vision improved significantly. This approach helped the patient avoid a corneal transplant and regain their quality of life.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Garg is leading a randomized clinical trial to test the safety and effectiveness of an ophthalmic solution for treating persistent corneal epithelial defects. This condition occurs when the cornea fails to heal properly after injury or disease.
Dr. Garg is also a professor and vice chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine. His research focuses on cataract surgery, keratoconus, corneal transplantation, dry eye disease, and corneal infections. He has authored numerous publications and co-edited a key textbook on cataract surgery.
An active participant in the medical community, Dr. Garg regularly lectures at conferences and symposia across the country and internationally.
